McCarthy Tétrault’s National Strength recognized at the 2020 Inaugural Canadian Law Awards

McCarthy Tétrault is proud to announce that it has been named recipient of 5 industry-leading awards at the virtual 2020 Canadian Law Awards, including its Inclusion Now program awarded Diversity Initiative of the Year.

Inclusion Now is McCarthy Tétrault’s industry-leading action-oriented program aimed at attracting, retaining and advancing women, Black, Indigenous, and people of colour, members of the LGBTQ2S community, and people with disabilities. It is a multi-year, plan built on four pillars, Leadership, Talent, Culture, and Community, that informs every aspect of who we are as a Firm. Through Inclusion Now, we are eliminating structural barriers, ensuring equality of opportunity, providing cultural competency education, increasing diverse representation, and building a deeply inclusive culture where all our people feel a sense of belonging.

McCarthy Tétrault is the first, and only, Canadian law firm to have built a stand-alone office dedicated to diversity, inclusion and corporate social responsibility, and to have appointed a full-time Chief Inclusion Officer who is a member of our Leadership team and has a Firm-wide mandate. The Inclusion Now Office has three dedicated and two part-time resources, including a Senior Legal Advisor on Indigenous Initiatives, a role that is another first in the Canadian legal profession. McCarthy Tétrault is the only law firm in Canada making this level of investment into diversity and inclusion.

  • Infrastructure & Projects Deal of the Year: Wataynikaneyap Transmission Project – McCarthy Tétrault advised the Manufacturers Life Insurance Company and Sun Life Assurance Company of Canada in the closing of a secured credit facility to First Nation LP in order to finance its equity interest in Wataynikaneyap Power LP with a team led by Lynn Parson and Steve Furlan that included Jacob Stone and Alexandre Saulnier-Marceau (Financial Services), George Vegh (Regulatory), Joanna Rosengarten (Environment), Scott Chalmers (Construction), and Bryn Gray (Litigation/First Nations).
     
  • M&A Deal of the Year: Air Canada Acquires Aeroplan – McCarthy Tétrault advised CIBC in connection with Air Canada's acquisition of the Aeroplan rewards program from Aimia Inc. with a team led by David Woollcombe that included Matthew Kelleher (Business), Ana Badour and Justin Lapedus (Financial Services), James Gage and Heather Meredith (Bankruptcy & Restructuring), Oliver Borgers, Debbie Salzberger and Nikiforos Iatrou (Competition), Caroline Zayid, William Black and Michael Rosenberg (Litigation), Christine Ing (Technology), and Gabrielle Richards, Wendy Brousseau and Justin Shoemaker (Tax).
     
  • Private Equity Deal of the Year: BC Partners Buys GardaWorld – McCarthy Tétrault advised Rhône Capital, as seller, in BC Partners' acquisition of a C$5.2 billion majority interest in GardaWorld with a team led by Clemens Mayr that included Fraser Bourne (Corporate/M&A), Fred Purkey and Angelo Discepola (Tax), Dominic Thérien and Debbie Salzberger (Competition).
     
  • Commercial Litigation Team of the Year: Canada (Minister of Citizenship and Immigration) v. Vavilov, and the dual appeal of Bell Canada v. Canada (Attorney General)- McCarthy Tétrault represented the National Football League and Bell Canada before the Supreme Court of Canada in the Administrative Law Trilogy. The team was successful in overturning the CRTC’s decision to ban substitution of American commercials during the Super Bowl. The team led by Steven Mason and included Brandon Kain, Grant Buchanan, Richard Lizius, Joanna Nairn, Peter Grant, and James S.S. Holtom. McCarthy Tétrault also acted for Advocates for the Rule of Law as interveners before the Supreme Court of Canada in the Administrative Law Trilogy with a team led by Adam Goldenberg that included Jacob Klugsberg and Rachel Chan.
     

The Canadian Law Awards are new awards developed by Lexpert,Canadian Lawyer and InHouse Lawyer that recognize the nations leading law firms, in-house legal teams, individual lawyers and the leading deals and cases, and represent true excellence in the legal profession.
