On August 29, 2017, Airbnb and the Government of Quebec announced the completion of the first-ever tax remittance agreement in Canada, which will allow Airbnb to collect and remit the tax on lodging on behalf of the hosts on its home-sharing platform. The agreement will see the home-sharing platform remit a 3.5% tax as of October on stays of under 31 days. The amount raised will be returned to the Province's regional tourism offices.
McCarthy Tétrault Tax Partner Nicolas Cloutier represented Airbnb in this first tourist-tax agreement in Canada.
