Michael Burgess is a lawyer in our Litigation Group in Toronto. Michael’s practice is focused on litigating all types of intellectual property disputes, including those centred on patents, trademarks, copyright, confidential information, and trade secrets.

Prior to joining McCarthy Tétrault, Michael worked in the litigation group at a leading intellectual property boutique. Michael has represented clients in the chemical, oil and gas, telecommunications, construction, manufacturing, cosmetic, pharmaceutical, electronics, and robotics industries in all types of intellectual property disputes before the Federal Court of Canada and the Ontario Superior Court of Justice. Michael has also appeared as counsel before the Federal Court of Appeal.

Michael obtained his Bachelor of Applied Science degree in Mechanical Engineering (Thermofluids) with distinction from the University of British Columbia in 2007, and worked as a naval architect, marine engineer, and project manager for a premier Canadian ship design firm as well as one of the largest ferry operators in the world before his legal career. Michael is a registered professional engineer in the provinces of Ontario and British Columbia.

Michael obtained his JD from the University of Toronto in 2013 during which he was the recipient of the Director’s List distinction at the Center for Transnational Legal Studies in London, U.K. for placing amongst the top of his class in that program. Michael also served as the Executive Editor for the University of Toronto Faculty of Law Review while in law school.

Michael was called to the bar in 2014. He is a member of the Law Society of Ontario, the Intellectual Property Institute of Canada, The Advocates’ Society, the Toronto Lawyer’s Association, the Canadian Bar Association, the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers, Professional Engineers Ontario, and Engineers & Geoscientists British Columbia.

Outside of the office, Michael enjoys hiking, travelling, and camping and has completed adventures in Africa, Patagonia, the Himalayas, Borneo, and Antarctica. Michael also enjoys all activities on the water.
