Jeff Sun is an associate in our national Intellectual Property Group. His practice is primarily focused in the area of intellectual property, including acquisition, commercialization, and enforcement of intellectual property rights.

Jeff has drafted and prosecuted patent, industrial design, and trademark applications, and has conducted patentability, trademark availability, and freedom-to-operate searches. Jeff has also provided support in intellectual property rights disputes. Jeff is a registered patent agent in both Canada and the United States.

Prior to joining McCarthy Tétrault, Jeff practiced at a leading intellectual property boutique firm in Vancouver. Before entering the legal profession, Jeff conducted research related to neuromorphic computing, and improving complementary metal-oxide semiconductor (CMOS) and nanoelectromechanical (NEM) relay technologies. He has published in some of these fields at the IEEE International Electron Devices Meeting (IEDM). Jeff also has experience working in QA at a multinational semiconductor corporation and R&D at a Vancouver-based fuel cell company.

Jeff received his B.S. in Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences and Materials Science Engineering from the University of California, Berkeley in 2014, his M.S. in Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences from the University of California, Berkeley in 2015, and his J.D. from the Peter A. Allard School of Law at the University of British Columbia in 2018. 

Jeff was called to the bar in British Columbia in 2019. He is a member of the Law Society of British Columbia, the Canadian Bar Association, and the Intellectual Property Institute of Canada.
