With outstanding knowledge of Canada’s mining, energy and technology markets, David partners with clients to help them develop successful execution plans that support their strategic objectives.

David Nikolejsin is a strategic advisor for McCarthy Tétrault located in British Columbia. Leveraging more than 15 years of experience as a leader within the B.C. government, David effectively navigates clients through the strategic shifts needed to remain competitive in Canada’s mining, energy and technology markets.

Having led the processes for several of British Columbia’s most high-profile mining and oil and gas projects and technology initiatives, David possesses a strong technical background, strategic insights and intricate knowledge of the commercial and political realities that Canada’s oil and gas, energy, mining, and technology sectors face.

David previously served the B.C. government as Deputy Minister for seven years under the Natural Gas Development and Energy and Mines Ministries, where he was responsible for mining, BC Hydro, independent power producers, oil, natural gas, and pipeline affairs. Prior to this, David was the Associate Deputy Minister of the Environmental Assessment Office, where he acted as Chief Executive of the stand-alone office responsible for environmental assessments of major projects in B.C., and David also served as the British Columbia Government Associate Deputy Minister and Chief Information Officer.

Earlier in his career, David spent two years as the Assistant Deputy Minister responsible for the Network BC initiative, during which David played a pivotal role in bridging the digital divide by connecting many rural and remote communities in British Columbia to high-speed broadband.

David continues to play a leading role in driving innovation and collaboration in Canada’s technology and digital space. Currently the Board Chair of the Digital Identification and Authorization Council of Canada, David provides guidance for Canada’s digital future with other public and private sector leaders in helping to set the strategic direction for Canadians’ full and secure participation in the global digital economy.

David is also widely considered to be a global leader in Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG), having worked extensively with governments, industry and environmental organizations on ESG matters. Notably, David led the process with all levels of government and First Nations to obtain a Final Investment Decision on the LNG Canada project — the single largest private sector investment in Canada’s history.

Through his extensive work in developing natural resources projects, David has developed a passion for helping First Nations achieve their goals in the natural resources space. David works closely with a number of First Nations and Indigenous organizations on a wide range of projects and policy.

Throughout his career, David has established large networks in a number of international markets, including much of Asia. He brings this global experience to bear in providing strategic support on cross-border issues, including procurement and other project–related matters, to help clients achieve their business objectives.
