On March 22, 2022, Apple and WiLAN entered into a settlement agreement that among other things, included the dismissal of WiLAN’s Canadian litigation against Apple.

On June 3, 2021, WiLAN filed a statement of claim against Apple, Inc., alleging that 59 Apple devices (comprising most models of the iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch) infringe their patent for mobile hand-over technology. WiLAN sought damages as well as a permanent injunction in respect of all devices in question.

WiLAN is an Ottawa-based non-practicing entity that  commercializes patented technologies, manages intellectual property and licenses inventions to corporations.

McCarthy Tétrault assisted Apple with a team led by Steven Mason that includes Sanjaya Mendis, Amber Blair, Jeff Sun (Intellectual Property), and Richard Lizius (Litigation).
