Recognized for her industry knowledge and client-centric approach, her practice focuses on capital markets, mergers and acquisitions, securities and financial services regulation and investment products. As a senior partner in the Business Law Group in Montréal and co-lead of the firm’s Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) and Sustainability Strategic Issues Group, Sonia delivers her team’s expertise including market-leading ESG expertise to each project and transaction.

Sonia regularly counsels public companies, financial institutions and intermediaries in the areas of corporate finance, reorganizations, mergers and acquisitions, governance and compliance. She also provides insightful and practical advice to dealers and advisors in financial services and fund managers as well as clearing houses and other regulated entities in the areas of securities, derivatives (both exchange traded and OTC) and insurance regulation and investment products with an emphasis on financial products such as collective investment vehicles, investment funds (domestic and off-shore), structured debt offerings and trading and clearing services.

An active contributor to the community, Sonia is the chair of McCarthy Tétrault’s national Annual Disclosure & Governance Seminar for public companies, a member of the derivatives consultative committee of the Québec Autorité des marchés financiers and leads courses on mergers and acquisitions, securities and derivatives law at the Faculties of Law of McGill University, Laval University and University of Ottawa. Additionally, she is a director and the chair of the human resource committee of The Prosperity Project, a registered charity aiming to stop COVID-19 from setting back Canadian women’s economic progress.

Sonia obtained her BA (philosophy) from Vassar College and her BCL and LLB degrees from McGill University. She is currently completing the required courses to obtain a Certificate in Climate Change Policy & Practice from the University of Toronto. Sonia was called to the Québec bar in 1988 and the Ontario bar in 1994.
