Re-Writing the Rules: The International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID) Updating Rules to Modernize and Streamline ICSID Proceedings

The ICSID describes itself as the “world’s leading institution devoted to international investment dispute settlement” and highlights that numerous international investment treaties and investment contracts agreed on ICSID as a forum for investor-State dispute settlement. The ICSID prides itself on promoting international investment through ensuring confidence in the dispute resolution process and has designed that process to account for the special characteristics of international investment disputes.

The ICSID has announced a complete overhaul of the rules and regulations in an effort to simplify and modernize, while creating a more time and cost efficient process. For a summary review of some of the most fundamental changes and alterations within the proposed new rules from the ICSID, including the development and introduction of a new mediation process and an expedited arbitration process, please refer to the two part blog series located here and here.
