McCarthy Tetrault Thanks Nikki Gershbain and Welcomes New Chief Inclusion Officer, Charlene Theodore

McCarthy Tétrault announces that Nikki Gershbain, the Firm’s Chief Inclusion Officer, has decided to step down from her role effective Nov 12, 2021 to pursue personal interests and do some consulting. Upon joining McCarthy Tétrault in 2018, Nikki harnessed the Firm’s passion for and commitment to diversity, inclusion and corporate social responsibility and helped to accelerate its efforts to foster a true culture of inclusion and belonging. Having played a critical role in shaping and developing the Firm’s numerous EDI initiatives, both within the Firm and the communities in which it serves, her important work has distinguished McCarthy Tétrault with law students, lateral talent and clients.

“Nikki is a true trailblazer,” said Barbara Boake, Partner & National People and Practice Leader. “An industry leader in Equity, Diversity and Inclusion, Nikki has advised several of our clients on their EDI work and has helped them build sustainable and impactful programs. We are tremendously proud of our Inclusion Now Office, which will continue to serve as a true centre of excellence within the Firm.”

Replacing Nikki will be Charlene Theodore, who will be joining McCarthy Tétrault as the Chief Inclusion Officer, effective January 3, 2022. As the first Black president of the Ontario Bar Association, Charlene designed and implemented a series of initiatives for law firms and Corporate Canada to reimagine workplaces, building productive, profitable, healthy, diverse and inclusive work environments for all. Charlene brings significant experience as a former employment and labour lawyer with a background in international human rights law and government relations.

“Charlene is a dedicated community leader and advocate for positive change who is deeply committed to continuing to move the dial on equity, diversity and inclusion at McCarthy Tétrault and in the profession,” Barbara said. “We would like to thank Nikki for all of the great work she has done over the years and wish her all the best.”
