Karl Tabbakh and Awanish Sinha recognized among Canadian Lawyer’s 2023 Top 25 Most Influential Lawyers in Canada

McCarthy Tétrault partners Karl Tabbakh and Awanish Sinha have been named among Canadian Lawyer’s Top 25 Most Influential Lawyers in Canada for 2023. Both are recognized in the Business category.

The annual list celebrates recent efforts of lawyers to influence public opinion, shape the law, improve legal services, and impact the justice community or government. Through their exceptional work with clients, public service, and contributions to the Canadian business community, pro bono efforts, and thought leadership, Karl and Awi exemplify our firm’s commitment to excellence and continue to shape the legal profession.

Karl is McCarthy Tétrault’s Regional Managing Partner for Québec, Co-lead of the firm’s International and Business Strategy, and a member of its Senior Leadership Team. Karl’s practice focuses on M&A and private equity, and clients seek him out for his natural deal-making skills, often retaining him at the outset of transactions to assist in structuring and strategy. He was recognized in this year’s list for his outstanding leadership in the Canadian business community, including his roles as Chairman of Invest in Canada and former Chair of the Canadian Chamber of Commerce, both organizations championing the success and attractiveness of investment in Canadian businesses. Karl brings a global approach to his practice and our clients, having spent 12 years working in the Middle East and the UK, providing clients with a unique understanding of international markets and significantly benefiting the broader Canadian business community.

Karl is also actively involved with philanthropy in the Montréal community. Under his leadership, McCarthy Tétrault has been a top corporate donor to United Way/Centraide. He also helped raise over $600,000 as Co-president of the Fillactive Father/Daughter Charity Ball to support confidence building activities for teen girls. Karl also sits on the Board of the National Circus School and Foundation.

Awi advises clients in extraordinary circumstances. His practice includes political law mandates (conflict of interest, lobbying and elections law, and parliamentary hearings), sensitive reputational risk matters, and transformative, often unexpected, shifts in public policy or market conditions. He has been recognized for his exceptional work and critical role in serving Canadian businesses facing complex, unprecedented challenges, including the COVID-era return of pro sports, the establishment of corporate vaccination policies, the 2022 convoy protests, and the impact of geo-political issues like war sanctions, supply chain disruptions, and foreign interference concerns.

Awi has also contributed to and been profiled for his thought leadership on political law, civic literacy, and corporate diversity in legal publications and mainstream media. He also gives back to the community by serving on the boards of the Canadian Club Toronto and the Tim Horton’s Foundation and was Co-chair of the firm’s United Way Campaign for four years.
