As I prepared cover letters for on-campus interviews, the prospect of transitioning from law school to practice seemed daunting. McCarthy Tétrault is outstandingly proactive in providing its students with all of the training and guidance needed to work efficiently at the firm. Throughout my summer, I found that every lawyer I worked with takes their formal or informal mentoring role to heart and took the time to explain what was needed from me and, more importantly, why they needed it. It was when I understood how my work fit into the bigger picture – the trial, the transaction, the business development project – that I started to understand what legal practice is really like. It encouraged me to take ownership of my contribution to the firm’s mandates. The highlight of my summer was working with a lawyer who gave me the opportunity to work on all of his files with an important client undergoing significant restructuring. By the end of the summer, it felt like this particular client was “my” client.
