I gained significant exposure to transactional work during the summer and had lots of contact with clients and third parties. There was no shortage of opportunities for interaction – from sending out documents for client signatures, to corresponding with opposing counsel on the other side of a transaction. Lawyers entrust a high level of responsibility to students at an early stage but provide mentorship and support along the way. I also had multiple opportunities to participate in business development activities. One memorable experience was attending a business development event at the Toronto Cricket Club after working on a significant transaction. I was invited to the event by the lawyers on the transaction team and participated in a fun croquet tournament (and to my surprise, ended up winning the trophy!) and had dinner with the client. My summer experience has confirmed to me that the quality of the work opportunities, feedback from the lawyers and mentorship at the Firm are second to none.
