A Day in The Life

“During my summer at the firm, I had the opportunity to work on a private-placement financing deal with a local technology start-up. It was interesting to learn about a new industry while working on the file. The partner included me in interactions with the client throughout the entire process – from the beginning all the way to a successful closing.”

I have been provided with several opportunities to do very exciting work for the Real Property and Planning Group. One piece was a large due diligence project for a commercial purchase of bare land. That project involved running a wide variety of searches, such as corporate, workers compensation, property tax, and many more. I was tasked with dissecting and organizing the information, and creating a comprehensive review of all risks and liabilities associated with the purchase.

My work was sent directly to the client, and it is very satisfying to know that I played a role in such a significant purchase of land. Another project I completed in Real Property and Planning was researching the topic of landlord consent for sub-leases.

My research formed part of a lecture presented by a partner at the Calgary Leasing Conference. I was invited to attend the conference, and the partner was kind enough to thank me for my contribution during his presentation.

When I began work as a summer student, I did not anticipate having the opportunity to take part in the interesting and meaningful work that I have. While I have already worked for almost every practice area in the firm, the work for the Real Property Group has been particularly rewarding.

I received insightful and encouraging feedback for research memos that I prepared, which provides for great learning opportunities. Not only that, but the work that I had done was used directly to advise a client on the matter. This demonstrated to me that my work was meaningful, which is a great feeling when you are just starting out.

As a result of my previous work, I was brought into a large commercial real estate transaction that I will be able to see through from the beginning until the end. The quality of work at McCarthy Tétrault is only surpassed by the quality of people here.
