Hear It From Our people

Associate (2017/18 Articling Student)

One highlight of my experience as an articling student in the labour and employment group involved preparing for an unfair labour practice complaint hearing at the Labour Relations Board, which transformed, day of, without much warning, to a mediation. Watching the partner I worked for on that file use my research, while quickly adapting his submissions from those appropriate for a hearing to those relevant to a mediation, was a delight, especially since it resulted in a positive outcome for our client.

Another highlight has been working on many aspects of a single large file, from conducting document review, to participating in client phone calls, to summarizing on-going proceedings in multiple jurisdictions, to helping draft an appellate factum and to hopefully seeing that issue argued in court in the fall! The file is unique because it bridges both the labour and employment and litigation practice groups, and has allowed me the opportunity to work closely with associates in both groups. I have enjoyed becoming intensely familiar with the details of a case, participating in collaborative team meetings where I can step back and see the bigger picture and seeing the strength of the McCarthy team when it comes to developing strategy.

Both experiences made me feel like a valued team member and helped me become a better advocate.
