I chose McCarthy Tétrault because I wanted a challenge. I wanted to be pushed, to be given more than I thought I could handle, and to be given the chance to shine. My summer delivered in spades. Having no experience in transactional work, I sought to ‘get my feet wet’ in the Real Property & Planning group. Instead, I was given significant responsibility. I was asked me to take the lead on small commercial real estate purchases and to assist with a leanly-staffed billion-dollar lending transaction. It was exhilarating. With the support of the junior associates and my assigned mentor, I drafted key agreements, kept the client up-to-date, and communicated directly with associates and partners at opposing firms. I was always comfortable asking for instructions, advice, or feedback from anyone for whom I had worked. The culture of mentorship that permeates the firm is obvious and highly beneficial for summer students. I know that my work was valued and that I am a better writer, researcher, and future lawyer as a result of my summer experience at McCarthy Tétrault.
