McCarthy Tétrault’s Litigation Practice Group Leader, Caroline Zayid, named one of Canada’s 100 Most Powerful Women
November 24, 2017
Toronto, November 24, 2017 — Caroline Zayid, Partner & National Practice Group Leader for Litigation, was recognized as one of Canada’s 100 Most Powerful Women by The Women’s Executive Network (WXN) at their annual awards gala in Toronto. The Canada's Most Powerful Women: Top 100 Award is reserved for the nation’s most highly-accomplished women in their respective fields, who have “shown resilience, rallied others, overturned obstacles, and paved a path for the next generation” according to WXN.
As one of the few women in Canada to lead a country-wide practice group at a major national law firm while continuing her legal practice, Caroline joins an elite group of Canadian women who hold leading roles in business, politics, entrepreneurship, and more. That group of Top 100 alumni includes several McCarthy Tétrault partners and alumni.
“Caroline’s impact on our firm has been huge,” said Dave Leonard, CEO of McCarthy Tétrault. “Not only has she worked on some of the most significant class actions in Canadian history, but she has been a tremendous influence for good within the firm, a leading advocate for diversity and for initiatives that have fostered other women’s success. She has truly played an essential role in bringing McCarthy Tétrault to its current standard of excellence.”
Caroline has been at McCarthy Tétrault for the entirety of her 27 years in law. Her practice focuses on product liability, class actions, public law and professional regulation. A highly-regarded litigator and thought leader, she has represented some of the firm’s largest clients and often acts in the most high-profile class actions in Canada. She was involved in the Bre-X and Walkerton cases and in 2016, represented 10 provinces and territories in the Supreme Court of Canada in litigation related to the Hepatitis C case, which was the biggest class action settlement in Canadian history. She oversees over 200 lawyers in her role as Litigation National Practice Group Leader, and acts as a role model for many of the firm’s more junior lawyers.
“Being named one of this year’s Top 100 Most Powerful Women in Canada holds deep meaning for me,” said Caroline. “It means I can have a greater influence to help other women around me be successful and achieve their full potential as leaders. I’ve done my best to inspire the next generation of leaders in law, and to have those efforts recognized by the Women’s Executive Network is a great honour.”
WXN launched Canada’s Most Powerful Women: Top 100 Awards in 2003 to shine a spotlight on the incredible accomplishments of professional women across Canada in a way that would both recognize talented leaders and inspire others—the next generation, their peers and themselves—to push the boundaries of what’s possible even further. Since then, WXN has celebrated the accomplishments of over 1,000 remarkable women through the Awards. Further information is found at www.wxnetwork.com/.
