McCarthy Tétrault Authors Cross-Border Class Actions Chapter in ABA’s Recent Developments in Business and Corporate Litigation, 2015
June 30, 2015
Toronto, June 30, 2015 – McCarthy Tétrault is pleased to announce that three of its litigators authored the "Cross-Border and Multi-Jurisdiction Class Actions – A Canadian Perspective" section in the Class Actions chapter in the American Bar Association’s Recent Developments in Business and Corporate Litigation, 2015 Edition.
Covering a broad range of substantive areas of business law, the 2015 edition of Recent Developments provides an overview of business and corporate litigation topics that have emerged during the past year. Toronto litigators Christopher Hubbard, Elder Marques and Michael O’Brien (together with former McCarthy Tétrault partner Anthony Alexander) review and comment on how Canadian courts have applied jurisdictional principles in the class action context, both in assessing whether certification is appropriate and in relation to the enforcement of foreign class action orders. The other chapters in the two-volume review summarize cases, legislation, trends and developments in antitrust, corporate, employment, bankruptcy and other facets of business law.
The authors collaborated with partners Shaun Finn (in the firm’s Montreal office) and Jill Yates (in the firm’s Vancouver office) to ensure that their contribution reflected key developments across Canada.
The authors also received assistance from articling student Jessica Laham, who will join the firm’s Litigation Group in September 2015 as a first-year associate.
McCarthy Tétrault partner Christopher Hubbard’s corporate/commercial litigation practice includes class actions, mining litigation, product liability and product recalls, insurance, contractual disputes, securities litigation and shareholder disputes. He also acts in medical malpractice and professional liability cases.
Elder Marques, partner, has a broad litigation practice that includes complex corporate and commercial disputes, class actions, securities litigation and shareholder applications, defamation and a broad range of professional liability cases.
Michael O’Brien, associate, acts for clients on a range of corporate and commercial disputes, competition and securities matters, medical malpractice disputes and professional liability cases.
McCarthy Tétrault’s Class Actions Group is an integrated team whose multijurisdictional approach allows the firm to offer seamless, coordinated service – not only in different cities and provinces, but also internationally and across various areas of legal practice and industry-specific expertise. In addition to its class action litigators, the firm has leading practitioners in fields as diverse as securities, M&A, consumer protection, corporate finance, financial services, environmental matters, products liability, pharmaceuticals, tax, construction, natural resources, intellectual property and administrative, labour, criminal and real estate law. The firm’s strong working relationships with leading US law firms allows the Class Actions Group to work alongside US counsel on US-originating proceedings, and likewise on international proceedings.
