Toronto, April 15, 2015 – McCarthy Tétrault is delighted to announce that Chia-yi Chua, partner in our Tax Group and leader of our Tax Disputes Group, has been appointed Honorary Consul General (HCG) of the Republic of Singapore. He was recognized at an event last night, where His Excellency Philip Eng, High Commissioner of the Republic of Singapore, formally opened the office of the Singapore Consulate-General, situated at the firm’s Toronto location.
“We are extremely proud of Chia-yi and we welcome the opening of the Consulate General in our offices,” said Marc-André Blanchard, Chair and Chief Executive Officer of McCarthy Tétrault. “This appointment celebrates Chia-yi’s ability to cultivate significant relationships and his capacity to provide strategic advice as it relates to the Asian marketplace. In my view, this new responsibility speaks to his birth country’s confidence in his sharp judgment and professional expertise.”
"Canada and Singapore are gateway economies, both major players in their respective parts of the world," said the Honourable Jean Charest, partner and former Premier of Québec. “Chia-yi is a superb choice and will continue to nurture this significant relationship between our nations. My hearty congratulations to him on this esteemed appointment.”
Chia-yi Chua has acted as counsel for corporations in all of Canada’s significant industries, including the financial services, telecommunications, resource, retail, hospitality and transportation sectors. He has represented these clients before the Tax Court of Canada, the Ontario Superior Court of Justice, and other appellate courts. Chia-yi is a key member of McCarthy Tétrault’s Asia Practice Group.
