Making a Difference: McCarthy Tétrault donates $10,000 to Recognize Three Volunteers
May 17, 2010
Toronto, May 17, 2010 — From schools in Cambodia and Guatemala, to cancer research labs in North America, the time and talent of three McCarthy Tétrault employees are giving opportunity and hope to others. Susan Dick, Stephanie Kong-Foon and Karin LeBlanc are the winners of the McCarthy Tétrault 2009 Volunteer Recognition Award, and will direct $10,000 in donations from the McCarthy Tétrault Foundation to four Canadian charities.
Children in the Guatemalan village of Loma Linda will be moving from poverty to opportunity, thanks to Susan Dick’s work with the Compassionate Eye Foundation (CEF). Helping the CEF manage construction of a three-room school in the village was just one of Susan’s many volunteer accomplishments in the last year. The Director of IT User Services in the Vancouver office is splitting her $6,000 1st prize donation between the CEF and Habitat for Humanity.
Continuity is important at McCarthy Tétrault, so it’s no surprise that Toronto legal assistant Stephanie Kong-Foon immediately recognized that a consistent learning environment was essential to the Cambodian orphans she met through her work with Charity Foundation for the Children. That is why Stephanie established a fund to hire a local teacher, and is raising funds to continue to pay the teacher and hire another. Stephanie’s 2nd prize donation will be going to Charity Foundation for the Children.
Like many who have lost someone close to cancer, Karin LeBlanc was inspired to volunteer for The Weekend to End Breast Cancer Benefitting The Princess Margaret Hospital (now The Weekend to End Women’s Cancers). But the Toronto legal assistant didn’t stop after finishing the walk and getting the T-shirt — together with her teammates she planned, organized and fundraised for the Elda’s Angels Golf Tournament, which has raised $116,000 in just two years. The Weekend to End Women’s Cancers will be receiving Karin’s 3rd prize donation of $1,000.
While the dedication and achievements of Susan, Stephanie and Karin are hard to beat, many McCarthy Tétrault’s employees are making their own difference in the world, by taking part in the "One Day Can Make a Difference" program. This program allows staff to use one day of paid leave every calendar year to volunteer for a charity or in the community.
