McCarthy Tétrault embarks on legal education mission with Lawyers Without Borders Canada — Law firm’s first international mission takes lawyers to Haiti
Montréal, January 28, 2009 — Undertaking their first international pro bono mission in partnership with Lawyers Without Borders, McCarthy Tétrault lawyers will depart for Haiti, where they will participate in a legal education initiative aimed at sharing their expertise and experience in environmental law with the Haitian legal community.
As environmental protection and the right to a healthy environment have become urgent human rights issues in Haiti, especially in Port-au-Prince, authorities from Haiti State University have expressed a specific need for an educational program on environmental law.
Cindy Vaillancourt and David-Emmanuel Roberge, from McCarthy Tétrault’s environmental and litigation groups, will be in Haiti from February 3 to 17, delivering training seminars to Haitian students and jurists on national and international environmental law.
"Giving back to the community is a fundamental part of McCarthy Tétrault’s identity and values," said Marc-André Blanchard, McCarthy Tétrault Managing Partner for the Québec Region. "Our partnership with Lawyers Without Borders gives us an excellent opportunity to contribute to the progress of human rights initiatives around the world. I applaud Cindy and David-Emmanuel for committing themselves to this worthy cause."
This initiative is part of the national law firm’s three-year partnership with LWB as its first "Partner without Borders," which is the organization’s highest donor status. "We are very proud to undertake this first mission with McCarthy Tétrault," said Pascal Paradis, Lawyers Without Borders Canada’s Executive Director. "The firm’s contribution of its expertise, dynamism and resources to our Haiti project and to our organization is invaluable."
The mission is organized by Lawyers Without Borders Canada in collaboration with World University Service of Canada, which operates, in consortium with three other Canadian NGOs, the Programme de coopération volontaire pour la gouvernance en Haïti, a program financed by the Canadian International Development Agency.
