Toronto, June 20, 2005 – Canada’s premier law firm, McCarthy Tétrault, once again demonstrated the power of its cross-border practice by working on six of the top 15 deals last year, including acting for Molson on its merger with Coors. This transaction, worth $6 billion, was the largest cross-border deal in North America in 2004, and ranked top cross-border deal by both Lexpert and Bloomberg.
"We’re exceedingly proud of the work done on this complex deal by our experienced team of talented lawyers led by Lorna Telfer and Garth Girvan" said McCarthy Tétrault Chair and Chief Executive Officer W. Iain Scott. "When clients are putting together major, multijurisdictional transactions, they turn to McCarthy Tétrault for our depth and breadth of expertise across the board."
Considered an important transaction in both the U.S. and Canada, the deal was a merger of two primarily family-controlled companies, each with its own culture and history. Adding to the complexities were significant cross-border tax issues, as well as complex shareholder negotiations.
McCarthy Tétrault has an impressive depth and range of international and U.S. cross-border experience. The firm advises on cross-border private placements, public offerings and transactions involving U.S. assets. In addition, the firm’s M&A practitioners are highly regarded for their key role on some of the largest deals in Canada and abroad. The group enjoys an enviable position, receiving top rankings each year in international directories.
With offices in all major Canadian financial centres, as well as New York and London, McCarthy Tétrault advises on many of the largest transactions and cases around the world. Authoritative legal directories such as the International Financial Law Review and the Guide to the Leading 500 Lawyers in Canada consistently rank McCarthy Tétrault among the world’s top law firms. The most recent edition of Chambers Global: The World’s Leading Lawyers describes McCarthy Tétrault as "clearly a leader" with "an enviable position in the marketplace." With close to 750 lawyers representing a broad spectrum of practice areas, it’s easy to see why McCarthy Tétrault is Canada’s premier law firm.
