McCarthy Tétrault Tops American Lawyer Magazine’s Deal Chart
April 11, 2005
Toronto, March 24, 2005 – The $12 billion merger of Noranda and partially owned Falconbridge and the $2.55 billion dollar YellowPages-Bain acquisition were noted by American Lawyer magazine as being among the biggest deals of the year in Canada. And in both cases, the deals were handled by the premiere Canadian law firm, McCarthy Tétrault. Chosen by the editors of American Lawyer, these deals are selected based on their value, the number of law firms involved and their impact on the Canadian business scene.
"It’s gratifying, but not surprising, that Canadian business turns to McCarthy Tétrault when they put together large, complex deals, such as the Noranda-Falconbridge merger or the YellowPages acquisition" said McCarthy Tétrault Chair and Chief Executive Officer W. Iain Scott. "Our breadth of experience and ability to handle intricate transactions gives our clients confidence."
Led by Garth Girvan, with senior support from Jonathan Grant, Partners in the firm’s business law practice, the Noranda-Falconbridge merger created one of the world’s largest base-metals producers. "We were pleased to participate in a deal that simplified ownership and helped create value for these important Canadian companies," said Girvan, who also counselled Noranda in its recent talks with China Minmetals.
The $2.55 billion deal to buy Advertising Directory Solutions from Bain Capital solidified YellowPages’ position as the market leader in telephone directories – they already control 90 per cent of the directories markets and the addition of 94 books for 10 million customers will cement their position. McCarthy Tétrault advised the lenders to Bain Capital with a team headed by Barry Ryan, leader of the firm’s financial services practice with transitional support from Jim Morand, Marc Lemieux, Susan Kennedy, Barbara Boake and Kevin Wright, Partners in the firm’s financial services practice.
Recently McCarthy Tétrault acted as lead counsel to Molson on Lexpert’s top cross-border M&A deal of 2004. McCarthy Tétrault has also most recently represented 70 of the top 100 companies in the National Post's Fp500, allowing the firm to enjoy an enviable position in the marketplace. In fact, McCarthy Tétrault has more lawyers listed in the Lexpert-Thomson Guide To The Leading 100 Canada-Us Cross-Border Corporate Lawyers In Canada than any other law firm.
With offices in all major Canadian financial centres as well as New York and London, McCarthy Tétrault advises on many of the largest transactions and cases around the world. Authoritative legal directories such as the International Financial Law Review and Lexpert’s Guide to the Leading 500 Lawyers in Canada consistently rank McCarthy Tétrault among the world’s top law firms. The most recent edition of Chambers Global: The World’s Leading Lawyers describes McCarthy Tétrault as "clearly a leader" with "an enviable position in the marketplace." With close to 800 lawyers representing a broad spectrum of practice areas, it’s easy to see why McCarthy Tétrault is Canada’s premier law firm.
