September 21, 2004 – The 2004 edition of Chambers Global: The World’s Leading Lawyers recognizes McCarthy Tétrault as a top firm in every practice area covered, and singles out 38 McCarthy Tétrault lawyers among the world’s best, more than any other Canadian firm. The only Canadian law firm to be ranked in the top tier in five practice areas, McCarthy Tétrault was also honoured in the Chambers Awards for 2004, for having "the largest share of major deals in 2003" and "an enviable position in the marketplace."

"For shear breadth and depth, the firm can scarcely be bettered," reads the guide, adding that McCarthy Tétrault is "clearly a leader." Noting its "significant cross-border capability," Chambers also praises the firm’s "pioneering work in developing innovative structures for the banking and life insurance industries." Its real estate team, which received more recommendations than any other in Canada, is described as the "model" department that other law firms "aspire to." One commentator summed up McCarthy Tétrault’s placement succinctly: "The top tier is exactly where it ought to be."

McCarthy Tétrault Chair and Chief Executive Officer W. Iain Scott said: "Our firmwide success is powered by our lawyers’ talent, dedication and teamwork throughout our many practice areas. We are very pleased to be recognized once again by Chambers Global among the best law firms in the world."

This year, nine lawyers from McCarthy Tétrault are newly recommended in Chambers Global. Gordon Baird, Michael McIntosh and Gordon Thompson are recognized for their work in banking and finance. Christopher Hoffmann and Richard Shaw are singled out for their achievements in corporate mergers and acquisitions. John Currie is described as an "up-and-comer" in real estate law. Sean Collins, Jamey Gage and Larry Robinson are newly listed in the category of insolvency/corporate recovery.

McCarthy Tétrault, Canada's premier law firm, has a significant presence in all major financial centres in Canada as well as in New York and London, UK. With close to 800 practitioners, the firm regularly advises on many of the largest transactions and cases in Canada and around the world. McCarthy Tétrault is also the top-ranked legal advisor on Canadian completed mergers and acquisitions for 2003, according to Thomson Financial’s international league tables and is listed as "Top M&A Shop in Canada" by the Financial Post. Other authoritative legal directories such as the International Financial Law Review and Lexpert’s Guide to the Leading 500 Lawyers in Canada consistently rank the firm with top ratings in various practice areas.
