Richard O’Doherty is a partner of our Financial Services and Projects Group in Montréal. His practice is focused on banking and corporate finance, particularly in the areas of infrastructure, energy and corporate lending. In these areas of expertise, Mr. O’Doherty advises banks, pension funds and other financial institutions as well as borrowers, including many developers, in the development and financing of projects in the infrastructure and energy sectors.

Mr. O’Doherty has been recognized as "Lawyer of the Year" for Banking and Finance Law in the current edition of Best Lawyers in Canada. He also appears in the current edition of The Canadian Legal Lexpert Directory as a leading lawyer in the area of banking and financial institutions, project finance, asset securitization, asset based lending and infrastructure law. He also appears as leading lawyer in project finance in the 2015 edition of Guide to the Leading 500 Lawyers in Canada directory and in American Lawyer, both published by Lexpert.

Mr. O’Doherty’s recent experience includes:

  • acting for the successful proponent in connection with the development of new McGill University Health Centre, which PPP project won Project Finance International’s 2010 Award for Deal of the Year (Americas) and the 2010 Canadian Council for Public-Private Partnerships’ Gold Award for Project Financing;
  • acting for the equity and lending syndicates in connection with a capital markets platform established by the Montréal airports authority totalling over $1 billion;
  • acting for proponents and lenders in various PPP projects, including the A25 Bridge Project, the Montreal Symphony Concert Hall, the AMT Maintenance Centre and the Place Bell Project;
  • acting for other developers and financial institutions in various other Canadian project financings, including a $725 million financing of Canada’s largest wind farm project and the financing of Canada’s second largest solar project;
  • acting for wind farm, solar and gas-fired facilities operators across Canada in connection with various renewable power systems financings;
  • acting for a lender and equity holder in connection with $944 million financing of Stornoway Renard Diamond mining project;
  • acting for a Canadian bank in assisting a developer (locally and internationally) of a public bike hire;
  • acting for a number of lending syndicates in the forestry, energy, transportation, telecommunications, engineering, agribusiness and retail sectors;
  • acting for issuers and underwriters in various securitization and structure product transactions as well as covered bond programs.

Mr. O’Doherty received his integrated bachelor’s degree in civil law and common law (B.C.L./LL.B.) from McGill University in 1998. He also studied at the University of New South Wales in Sydney, Australia. He was called to the Québec bar in 2000.
